This is easily my all time favorite Ray Bryant album. It was recorded in the fall of 1968 in NYC with a trio that consisted of Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on the drums, some cuts are also augmented by a small horn section made up of just flugelhorn and trumpet. The recording here is just right, its mixed in a way that pushes Tate’s hard and heavy drums right up front so you can really feel the funk. The drums are the perfect accompaniment to Bryant’s bluesy piano playing and lay a great framework for Ron’s snaky bass lines. The horns are amazing too, mainly focusing on short little licks and sounding almost like something you’d here out of Memphis. This is about as funky as Ray Bryant ever got, peep it and see what you think.

haha looking forward to it ...
I know what you mean about varied tastes ... when I posted my hiphop rhodes comp over at my blog, you could have heard a pin drop!
I'm sort of alternating between my soul and jazz audiences, although of course they cross over ... you just can't leave either of them alone for too long or they run away!
keep up the good work mister :)
I'm in the cross-over camp, then. I'm looking forward to listening to the Bryant record (haven't got this one), but I very much enjoyed the Little Beaver as well. Bryant records would certainly have been originally bought by people who listened to soul as well. He had a hit dance record after all! I post very rare avant guard jazz, but I listen to, and love, a much wider range of music. There are a few blogs which successfully post soul, funk and jazz; do keep trying the soul posts. You'll get some visitors to cross the line, and you'll make me very happy!
after hear the pounding drums and piano on up above the rock, i had to get this one..thanks yo

bryant did a few albums of rhythm plus two trumpets (or flugel?). nice series of albums. man had a hard but not stiff touch on the piano keys, if you know what i mean.
