Ben Sidran "Puttin' in Time on Planet Earth"

I love this guy, a man after my own heart!! Ben Sidran has pulled off a long eclectic career in the music biz that spans nearly 40 years. He’s played producer, musician, lyricist, author, journalist, and just about anything else you could imagine in the field. Pretty fascinating guy and by the way, he also wrote the lyrics for college pal Steve Miller’s stoner-rock classic “Space Cowboy”. More bio here.

This is Sidran from 1972 on the Blue Thumb label and features a pretty impressive lineup of players. I’m not the biggest fan of the more lyrical numbers that predominate the 1st part of the album but side 2 is a different story. The first time I heard “Now I Live (And Now My Life Is Done)” I was absolutely floored. I said, “Who is that?” When my buddy showed me an album cover of a guy who looked like Cat Stevens leaning on some sort of rock structure, I was somewhat perplexed. Then I realized I had been let into some sort of secret club. It still never fails that when I spin this track out, there’s always someone who asks me, “Who is this?” I usually just smile and show them the cover. “Wanna join the club?”

Hi Johnny, consider me in...
heard some various sidran albums through the years, not always somethings that stuck by me, though... this one SURE has it's moments, side B has all the goodies, the man just has to know he doesn't have to sing to make it good :-) Thank you for this one.
peace, E-mile

Thanks a lot, doc! I have been looking for this one for a long time. I agree that the second part is much better.

For those who are interested I have uploaded Sidran's first album Feel Your Groove (1971). This has been around in blogland for some time, but all the copies I have come accross have two of the tracks damaged, so I have replaced them with a faultless copy that I have bought online:

The lengthy title track is particularly noteworthy.

The Don't Let Go album (1974) is available at Pirate Island:

But it is far less interesting than Sidran's first three albums.

Many thanks for this.
Sidran came through Tokyo not long ago, playing with Georgie Fame, no less -- and he's still got that edge (if not the voice).
Appreciated!
